From canoeing on the Zambezi River to the spice island of Zanzibar; from the Victoria Falls to east Africa's Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, you will enjoy tremendous wildlife viewing opportunities and local culture as you travel through the real Africa! This road based participatory group camping safari covers a great distance with remote and rough terrain. This trip is not for the faint hearted. Full itinerary and trip details below: DAY 1 JOHANNESBURG - NORTHERN PROVINCE Departing from Johannesburg in the early morning the group heads north. Stopping to pick up supplies the group will then make its way to a private wildlife reserve where you will enjoy a barbecue before camping. NORTHERN PROVINCE, camping, inclusive of dinner DAY 2 GREAT ZIMBABWE RUINS After a morning wildlife viewing walk the group will depart to the Zimbabwe border and on to the Great Zimbabwe ruins near Masvingo. The ancient ruins are believed by many to be Ophir from the Bible or King Solomon's Mines! The afternoon will be spent exploring the ruins. You will enjoy a restaurant dinner (at own expense). GREAT ZIMBABWE RUINS, camping, all inclusive excepting dinner DAY 3 MATOPOS After breakfast you will depart to Bulawayo and the Matopos National Park for an exciting afternoon game drive in an open safari vehicle. MATOPOS, camping, all inclusive DAY 4 HWANGE Enjoy a morning walk before departing for Hwange where the group will camp at Drifter's exclusive bush camp on the outskirts of the National Park. Enjoy an extensive game drive in an open safari vehicle during your stay here. HWANGE, camping, all inclusive DAYS 5, 6 VICTORIA FALLS After a short drive you will arrive in the town of Victoria Falls. The group will spend two days here at the Victoria Falls Drifter's Inn. There are numerous activities to pursue such as bungi jumping and white water rafting (at own expense), and clients are at leisure to explore the town. One evening meal here will be for your own expense. VICTORIA FALLS, Drifter's Inn, all inclusive excepting dinner one night DAY 7 GWABI Departing early this morning the group will leave Victoria Falls via the historic Livingstone Bridge over the Zambezi river into Zambia. You will travel on the long road around Lake Kariba to Gwabi where you will camp on the banks of the Kafue river. Relax by the pool and enjoy a hot shower. GWABI, camping, all inclusive DAYS 8, 9, 10 ZAMBEZI CANOE TRIP After a river safety and procedure briefing you will begin your canoeing adventure. The group will camp wild on river islands with excellent bird and game viewing opportunities. Hippo and other big game may be encountered at close range. This section of the safari does involve a certain amount of effort. The canoe trip ends at the Chongwe river where you will camp. On day 10 enjoy a game walk in the area before transferring back to Gwabi camp by boat, for a hot shower and a catered meal (at own expense). Camp the night. ZAMBEZI CANOE TRIP, camping, all inclusive excepting dinner one night DAY 11 KACHALOLA Heading north via Zambia's capital city, Lusaka, the group will stock up on supplies before moving eastwards. You will overnight in the Kachalola district. KACHALOLA, camping, all inclusive DAYS 12, 13 LUANGWA VALLEY You will travel on to camp on the banks of the Luangwa river where the group will overnight for two nights just outside the Luangwa National Park. You will enter the southern park for some spectacular game viewing with excellent opportunities for leopard sightings (optional night game drive at own expense). Camp both nights. LUANGWA VALLEY, camping, all inclusive DAYS 14, 15 LIVINGSTONIA BEACH Moving eastwards into Malawi, you will visit Lilongwe where the group has a chance to replenish supplies and do some curio shopping. Continuing to Lake Malawi you will camp on a beautiful beach for two nights. The days will be spent relaxing along the lakeshore soaking up the sun. The more energetic may enjoy snorkeling the crystal clear waters of this stunning lake. LIVINGSTONIA BEACH, camping, all inclusive DAYS 16, 17 LAKE MALAWI The group will travel north up the dramatic Lake road, following the water's edge. You will overnight at Chinteche the first night. The next day you will continue to the village of Karonga, near the Tanzania border, where you will camp. LAKE MALAWI, camping, all inclusive DAY 18 MIKUMI Entering Tanzania you will travel across this vast country. Camp will be established in the remote village of Mikumi. MIKUMI, camping, all inclusive DAY 19 DAR ES SALAAM This day the group will cover quite a distance arriving in Dar Es Salaam by noon. Making your way through this bustling city you will head directly to the harbor to board a ferry and cross to the spice island, Zanzibar. ZANZIBAR, camping, all inclusive DAYS 20, 21, 22 ZANZIBAR The group will spend three days on this fascinating island, exploring this multicultural community. You will spend time at remote villages and sandy beaches in the north, and make your way though historic Stone Town. You will then visit the slave pits and partake in a spice tour. The exciting food and fruit market is not to be missed! Dinner one night will be at a local restaurant (at own expense). ZANZIBAR, camping, all inclusive excepting dinner one night DAY 23 ZANZIBAR / DAR ES SALAAM Leaving the island you will board the night ferry for your journey back to the mainland. FERRY, camping, all inclusive DAYS 24, 25 ARUSHA Arriving in Dar Es Salaam in the early morning the group will pick up the vehicle and continue on to Arusha where you will spend two nights camping. Enjoy a full day curio shopping and exploring the markets in town. If the weather permits you may be able to view the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. ARUSHA, camping, all inclusive DAY 26 SERENGETI Traveling from Arusha to the Serengeti you are bound to witness the impressive Masai herding their cattle amongst the wildlife. Most of the day is a game drive arriving at the Seronera Camp site by late afternoon. SERENGETI, camping, all inclusive DAY 27 SERENGETI / NGORONGORO CRATER Rising early enjoy a full day's wildlife viewing before making your way to the Ngorongoro crater where you will overnight at Simba camp on the crater's edge. NGORONGORO CRATER, camping, all inclusive DAY 28 NGORONGORO CRATER Today the group will descend into the crater on the steep dirt track cut into the crater wall. The diverse habitats of lake, swamp, grassland and acacia forests bring with them an equal diversity of wildlife, with everything one can imagine from flamingoes to elephant, and the ever present Masai herdsman. After lunch you will exit the crater to return to Arusha for the night. ARUSHA, camping, all inclusive DAY 29 NAIROBI With Kilimanjaro in the distance the group will head due north to enter Kenya and to travel directly to Nairobi. You will overnight at a simple hotel with an evening farewell meal (meal at own expense). NAIROBI, hotel, all inclusive excepting dinner DAY 30 HOME After breakfast bid farewell to your fellow travelers as you each depart your separate ways.
Trip name: The Complete Africa Type of safari: Explorer Collection - Participatory group camping safari with scheduled departure dates. Trip length: 30 days Trip cost: US $1,995 + US $500 local payment per person during 2003. The US $500 payment is payable on departure in Johannesburg and is used to meet US $ cash payments in Zambia and Tanzania. There is no single supplement. Price excludes all air fares. Air tickets: Please contact our office for an airfare quote. When to travel: Wildlife viewing is best during the period May through October each year. Departures: This safari departs from Johannesburg fortnightly throughout the year on Wednesdays as follows. Africa can be harsh, with not only unpredictable weather, but unpredictable attitudes as well. Clients must expect delays for whatever reason: January 8 to February 6, 2003 This safari departs in reverse from Nairobi several times throughout the year. The itinerary is identical (however in reverse). Please contact our office for dates. Accommodations: Three man tents (shared by 2 people) with thin sleeping mats. Alternatively Drifters utilizes inns, log cabins, bungalows, and rondavels, even under the stars if desired. Group size and age: The average group size is 9. The minimum group size for a guaranteed departure is 6, however the trip may run with less. Groups are normally made up of individuals, couples, and sometimes groups of friends. A youthful mentality prevails and the maximum recommended age for travelers is 55 (waivers can often be obtained for older travelers in good health). Guides: These trips are led by well trained, enthusiastic, English speaking driver / guides who are well versed in the abundant flora and fauna of east and southern Africa. They are all registered with the Field Guides of Southern Africa and Satour. Luggage: Baggage is strictly limited to 15 kilograms packed in one large bag (barrel bag or internal frame backpack). A smaller hand bag or camera bag per person is allowed . Suitcases will not be permitted. Participation: If you wish to be pampered and amused with minimal effort on your part then this tour is not for you. Participation is essential and everyone is expected to help with chores to ensure the smooth running of the tour. A degree of flexibility is also essential because of the mere nature of the parameters in which this trip operates. This tour is not recommended for clients over 55 years of age. Trip price includes: transport by special safari vehicle, accommodations as stated, services of two English speaking driver / tour guide / cooks, all campsite and Parks fees except the Victoria Falls park entry fee, all camping equipment except sleeping bags (may be hired for US $10 per week), group equipment, activities as stated, and most meals as stated. Trip price excludes: international and domestic flights, airport taxes, entry visas, Victoria Falls park entry fee, sleeping bags, all airport / hotel transfers, and all items of a personal nature i.e. extra activities, trip insurance, tips and gratuities, laundry, drinks, and telephone calls. Visas: American passport holders visiting South Africa and Malawi as tourists DO NOT require entry visas. American passport holders visiting Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya as tourists DO require entry visas.
