Hotels, Lodges and Camps of South Africa From the remote Kalahari Desert to cosmopolitan Cape Town, South Africa is literally a world within one country. In terms of accommodations South Africa is home to several of the world’s leading hotels and many luxurious safari properties which we have personally visited and recommend to our clients.
Blue Train, South Africa – For over half a century South Africa's Blue Train has enjoyed an international reputation as one of the world's pre-eminent traveling experiences. The Blue Train was recently voted the world's leading luxury train by over 250,000 travel agents in 181 countries at the World Travel Awards. The Blue Train offers the discerning traveler a choice of journeys into a timeless world of grace, elegance and romance, where some of the world's most dramatic scenery stirs the imagination and luxurious comfort soothes the body and soul. While the Blue Train has been synonymous with unsurpassed luxury travel since 1946, a new train took to the tracks in 1997 and was joined by a second, sister train, in 1998. The first train accommodates 82 guests in 41 suites. The second accommodates 74 guests in 37 suites and features an observation car at the back of the train. By day, the elegantly furnished suites offer generous lounge chairs, which afford unequalled views of Africa. As night falls the suites become sumptuous and subtly lit bedrooms clothed in fine cotton linen and duvets. Considerable attention is paid to guests' needs. There is a writing desk next to the window, individually controlled air-conditioning, telephone and video monitor. A laundry service and the discreet availability of your own professional butler ensure that the Blue Train's guests will want for nothing. All accommodation aboard the Blue Train is en-suite. The marble bathrooms feature either a private shower or bath and an assortment of luxury oils and soaps. Guests may choose between a deluxe or a luxury suite. The deluxe suites have a choice of twin or double bed with shower or bath en-suite, while the larger luxury suites have a choice of twin or double bed with bath en-suite. Luxury suites are also equipped with CD and DVD players. The ambience of the lounge, bar and dining cars is one of warm elegance, where large windows allow for panoramic views of the passing countryside. Incandescent lighting gains added warmth from individual lamps gently highlighting the beautifully detailed buried wood paneling and original South African artwork. The Blue Train compares well with Rovos Rail. Rovos Rails rooms are larger, and the beds do not fold into the wall as they do on the Blue Train. Therefore you can rest at any time without having your butler make up your bed. The downside is that Rovos Rail trains are louder and "clunkier" for lack of a more suitable word. More of an experience, however so much so that the train stops during the night so guests may sleep properly. Because of this the popular Pretoria to Cape Town train journey takes two nights aboard Rovos Rail while the Blue Train trip takes only one night. Rovos Rail is privately owned, unlike the Blue Train, which is owned by Spoornet, a South African Government agency.

La Residence Country Hotel, Franschhoek, South Africa - Everything Liz Biden touches turns to gold. Not only did this über-hotelier transform Birkenhead House and Royal Malewane into two of South Africa’s most sought-after boutique hotels, but she performed the same trick with her private country residence of La Residence in the Cape Winelands. And whilst this much-loved 5-suite hideaway was generally considered a work of art by its discerning clientele, in 2007 La Residence was reborn, redesigned and even relocated! It now stands 500 meters away from its original location on a private 30 acre wine and olive estate in the picture perfect Franschhoek Valley. The brand new villa at its heart has been built in the same regal Tuscan style as its predecessor, yet this time it houses eleven ultra luxurious suites, each one conceived by Liz’s masterly interior designer, Ralph Krall and each one boasting restful views over the vineyards, olive orchards and lavender fields. Yet just as it was before at La Residence the pace of life is deliciously slow, doing a lap of the courtyard swimming pool about as energetic as it ever gets. The cuisine, of course, is still sublime and can be enjoyed on the terrace or in the elegant dining room, the management team of Len Straw, Edward Morton and Johan de Villiers still going that extra mile to make sure La Residence is your South African home-away-from home.
Le Quartier Francais, Franschhoek, South Africa – “Best Small Hotel in the World” according to Tatler in 2005! Le Quartier Francais rests in the historic French Huguenot village of Franschhoek, at the head of one of the Cape Wineland’s most beautiful valleys. Enter Le Quartier Français and you step into a Matisse painting - big blocks of primary colors saturate fine quality hand-painted fabrics. Design is simple, clean and playful - abstract floral prints and stripes abound. Attention to detail is exemplary at Le Quartier with smooth white Egyptian cotton sheets, down duvets made for sweet dreams, and beige wool carpets with under carpet heating for chilly mornings. All 10 Auberge rooms, 3 Grande rooms (ideal for honymooners) and 2 Petite Garden suites (with their own private gardens / patios) have working fireplaces, and en suite bathrooms with bath and separate shower. There are also Auberge Suites and 4 Quaters Suites. Rooms are situated around a central courtyard with a stylish black granite swimming pool, a wonderful place to spend an afternoon with an iced bottle of local Chardonnay. Enjoy an afternoon coffee or pre-dinner drink in the Parisian style bar with marble topped tables, or outside on the quaint patio with cornflower blue and creamy yellow furniture, the colors of Provence. Dining at Le Quartier Français should not be missed! Touted as one of South Africa's most innovative restaurants, Le Quartier Français has won numerous accolades for its food, service and wine. The acclaimed British publication, Restaurant, rated it as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world and best restaurant in Africa and the Middle East. The cuisine is a successful melange of French, Malay and traditional South African dishes, each to be enjoyed with its appropriate wine counterpart, of course. Le Quartier Français is a perfect base from which to explore the wonderfully picturesque Franschhoek valley, its wines, history, architecture, and culinary pleasures. Active guests may book a trout fishing excursion or hire mountain bikes. Those seeking a more relaxed pace may spend an afternoon strolling the town’s streets lined with art galleries and quaint shops. In addition the hotel has a small movie theatre. Large dining and living areas are filled with kudu-leather sofas, kuba textiles, zebra skin stools, hand-carved Indian cupboards and fine artworks. There are three pools and superb sun decks with sweeping sea views. The plentiful use of dark stained wood, Indian slate terraces and the black lined pools set the tone and ambience. The lodge provides a tranquil, luxurious haven, while Cape Town’s main attractions, the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain are only a 5 minute drive away. Clifton’s famous beaches are within walking distance although the hotel’s position high on the hill makes walking to and from the beaches difficult. Guests at Bantry Bay should be prepared to climb and descend many steps on the property itself.
Mount Nelson, Cape Town, South Africa – Colonial South Africa at its best! Opened in 1899 the luxurious 5 star Mount Nelson, set at the foot of Table Mountain on nine acres of beautiful parkland, is undoubtedly South Africa's most famous hotel. The 201 rooms and suites are individually furnished, air-conditioned, and appointed with en-suite facilities, mini-bar, television and international touch dial telephone. The hotel has two heated swimming pools, health and beauty salon, hairdresser, gym and two floodlit tennis courts. The hotel is within walking distance of the city center. The Mount Nelson is a member of the Leading Hotels of the World as well as the only hotel on the African continent to be listed as one of “The World's 100 Top Hotels” in the Official Hotel Guide. In addition the Mount Nelson has been showered with awards. Most recently the 2005 World Travel Awards voted the Mount Nelson Hotel as “Best Hotel in Africa” and “Best Hotel in South Africa”. The hotel won the same awards in 2003 and 2004! The downside? Unlike many Cape properties there are no stunning views.
One and Only, Cape Town, South Africa - Sol Kerzner is building a "One and Only" property at Cape Town's famed Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. It has been estimated that each of the 130 rooms and suites, with a minimum size of 700 square feet, will cost roughly US $400,000. Overlooking the yacht marina, with Table Mountain as a backdrop, the 7 story hotel will have 2 restaurants and a spa. The hotel is expected to open in May 2009.
Palace of the Lost City, Sun City, South Africa – The scale and grandeur is simply amazing! The architecture of the Palace pays homage to both art and nature - from the majestic entrance with its mosaic marble floors, soaring columns and the eighty foot high frescoed rotunda, to many intricate design accents taken directly from nature. The Palace's 338 rooms and suites all have views over water, jungle or the “Valley of Waves”, and have been designed with royal hospitality in mind. They are decorated in a unique style, with evocative African colors and intricately hand-carved furnishings. Each room has an entrance foyer, en-suite bathroom, lounge and seating area, air-conditioning, TV, radio, safe, telephone, minibar and butler station. The Palace has several wonderful restaurants and bars that can only be accessed by hotel guests. There is a most incredible pool area with abundant waterfalls and pool bar. Between the Palace and the Cascades Hotel guests may enjoy water activities at the Wave Pool including water slides and a man-made beach. In addition there are several casinos in the Sun City Complex. The two golf courses were designed by South Africa's golf guru Gary Player (mind the crocodiles on the 13th hole of the Lost City Golf Course). Bordering the Sun City Leisure Resort is the 137,000 acre Pilanesberg National Park which is home to the Big Five wildlife species: lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino. Balloon trips over the natural amphitheater created by several rings of 1.2 million-year-old volcanic hills, provide an unforgettable aerial perspective, and safaris from Sun City in the early morning and late afternoon offer the chance of viewing an exceptionally wide variety of animals and birds. We do not consider the Palace to be a wildlife viewing destination – rather a destination for incredible golf, poolside lounging and culinary excess! Keep in mind Sun International’s service can be hit and miss…

Rocktail Bay, Northern Natal, South Africa – One of the world’s top 10 dive locations! Situated in northern Natal, within the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve and adjoining the Maputaland Marine Reserve, is Rocktail Bay Lodge. This lodge lies within a proclaimed World Heritage Site and is considered by many experts to be one of the top 10 dive locations in the world!!! Recently Outside Magazine voted Rocktail Bay's beach as one of the best in the world. The secluded lodge is situated meters from the Indian Ocean in the coastal forest, just behind the first row of forested dunes. It offers perhaps the most private beach experience in South Africa on 30 kilometers of unspoilt, undeveloped and pristine coastline. Note that this not a tropical beach lined with palm trees...only low growing shrubs and trees. Guests are accommodated in 11 wood and thatch "tree house" chalets raised up on stilts into the forest canopy. The chalets are basic with balcony, proper beds, solar lighting, a ceiling fan, wardrobe and other furnishings. Each chalet has an en suite shower and toilet and an outdoor shower. The main area includes a thatched open air dining room, lounge, bar and small swimming pool with sun deck. The highlight here is the miles and miles of pristine and undeveloped coastline. In addition to simply sunning yourself on the clean golden beaches, a variety of guided activities are available. The Indian Ocean is ideal for snorkeling in search of tropical fish (flippers and snorkels may be borrowed at the lodge), while the surf and fly fishing is among the best on South Africa’s east coast. Nature walks through the coastal forest and grasslands, or drives in open 4x4 vehicles to Black Rock and other localities will enthrall naturalists and photographers. Horse back riding is on offer as an optional extra. During South Africa’s summer months Rocktail Bay Lodge is integrally involved in the ongoing loggerhead and leatherback turtle research that has been going on since the 1960s. Guests are able to accompany the resident turtle expert on research drives at low tide at night helping to monitor the turtles’ nesting numbers and their behavior. Scuba diving is an optional extra that is WELL WORTH IT!!! The camp has a fully accredited dive center that is unrivalled in South Africa. While diving the pristine reefs guests may see numerous shark species (one of the highlights during South Africa’s summer months is diving with pregnant ragged-tooth sharks), a wide array of colorful fish including butterfly fish and larger wahoo, marlin, rays and eels! During certain times of the year guests may also see migrating humpback and southern right whales and leatherback and loggerhead turtles. On our last visit the vice-president of Mares Diving Equipment claimed it was only behind the Maldives and Caymen Islands in dive quality. Having completed over 5,000 dives in his life he placed Rocktail within the top 15 dive spots in the world. Harpers and Queen in the UK voted Rocktail Bay as the best dive experience in the world.
Rovos Rail, South Africa - Rovos Rail revisits the golden age of luxury train travel offering unique train safaris through some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa. Once on board the train you have stepped back nearly a hundred years. Rich mahogonies, the dark green and cream livery of Rovos, the sinuous lines of the Art Nouveau lamps, the sparkling silver and crystal all contribute to the period style that is always tempered by regard for comfort. The lounge cars and dining cars are superb and provide a fascinating historical ambience. Breakfast, lunch and a sublimely elegant dinner, for which many guests prefer to dress more formally, are inclusive. After lunch or dinner, many travelers retire to the deeply cushioned armchairs of the observation car for coffee and liqueurs where the glassed end wall affords magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. There is also a small exterior viewing platform on, particularly popular with enthusiasts whilst traveling under steam. Bedrooms combine the opulence of pre-war travel with subtle modern innovations. Royal Suites are named after colorful characters from the Victorian era in South Africa, such as Cecil Rhodes. Spacious (16 square meters) and elegant, the air conditioned suites accommodate two people and have a private lounge area. En suite bathrooms combine original fittings, including a generously sized roll-top bath, with the modern technology of hot showers, hair dryers and shaver plugs and they are stocked with a particularly glamorous selection of Molton Brown bath goodies. Each of these self-indulgent suites takes up half a carriage! De Luxe Suites (11 square meters) are also glamorously appointed with en-suite shower rooms and lounge areas, occupying approximately one third of a carriage. Room service tags are hung outside the room and are almost immediately rewarded by a knock on the door - the staff are wonderfully helpful and efficient. The routes taken by Rovos Rail are varied and take in some of the most glorious sights Africa has to offer. Imagine a 14 day journey traveling from South Africa to Tanzania or exploring the fabulous golf courses of South Africa on a 9 day golf tour! The two "Pride of Africa" trains take a maximum of 72 passengers in 36 suites each. There is a third train available for private charter. A part of each journey is almost always under steam. Rovos Rail compares very well with the Blue Train. We would note that Rovos Rails rooms are larger, and the beds do not fold into the wall as they do on the Blue Train. Therefore you can rest at any time without having your butler make up your bed. Both Rovos Trains have observation cars with exterior viewing platforms while only one Blue Train has an observation car. The downside to Rovos Rail is that their trains are louder and "clunkier" for lack of a more suitable word. More of an experience, however so much so that the train stops during the night so guests may sleep properly. Rovos Rail is privately owned, unlike the Blue Train, which is owned by Spoornet, a South African Government agency.

The gym contains a treadmill, bicycle, weight station, stepper and free weights. For those requiring assistance with their workout, the spa staff are also internationally qualified gym instructors. Activities at Royal Malewane include day and night wildlife viewing drives and professionally guided walks. The lodge uses the same 12,000 hectare concession as Jackalberry and the other Thornybush lodges. As the Reserve is fenced, one will not see the large numbers/masses of wildlife that can be seen in the open areas of Botswana, Tanzania, and the Kruger. However, guests will most likely see the Big 5 in addition to a full range of indigenous animals. Over 250 bird species have been recorded in the Reserve. Royal Malewane employs South Africa's only active Master Tracker, and the most highly qualified Field Guide as their Head Ranger. Since opening in 2001 Royal Malewane has received numerous accolades. In 2003 Tatler awarded Royal Malewane “Top 10 Spas of the World”. In 2003 Harpers and Queen Travel Awards awarded Royal Malewane “One of the Top 150 Places in the World”. Saxon, Johannesburg, South Africa – Recognized as “The World’s Leading Boutique Hotel” for 6 years in a row (as of 2007, according to the World Travel Awards) there is no more luxurious place to stay in the Johannesburg area! Nestled in the exclusive Sandhurst suburb of Sandton, the Saxon makes a world class statement of ethnic African elegance, combined with personalized attention to detail. The Saxon has witnessed history within its walls as it became home to Nelson Mandela after he was released from prison (he spent six months in what is now called the Mandela Suite – this was in 1990 before the private home became a hotel). It was during this time that South Africa's former President used the serene setting of the Saxon to edit his autobiography "Long Walk to Freedom". Set in six acres of lush landscaped gardens, the Saxon has been designed to capture and embrace its natural environment. One of the design themes is the extensive use of water. The central point of the water theme is the magnificent 920 square meter heated swimming pool with underwater music. Opened to the public in the year 2000 the Saxon boasts 24 suites of various sizes, each featuring large screen televisions, VCR and DVD player with a surround sound system. The 4 presidential suites each feature a separate lounge and dining area. The spectacular Mandela and Mbeki platinum suites are furnished to cater for the most discerning traveler. All rooms are butler serviced. Main areas include two heated pools with terrace, bar, lounges, library, and restaurant. The Saxon boasts a world-class gymnasium with private trainers as well as a beauty salon, which offers a variety of massages and beauty treatments.
